It is asked of me on an almost daily basis. What does it feel like to drum?
I tell you that the first time I was called to drum I backed away.
I was afraid of the energy. I could see it call to me.
Yet I backed away literally kicking and screaming.
At a ritual called Sundance someone asked me if I liked to sing. I said yes.
In a moment I was transformed to a drum circle of strong women.
My acceptance of the honor calmed my fear as I invoked the energy freely.
From that moment on every time I saw a drum I had to touch it.
I had to feel the energy that was now so much part of the rhythm for my life.
Daily the songs, Henna Maya, Mic Mac Honor song. They go through my head.
I remember them like I’ve been singing and drumming to them my whole life.
I walk into places where they sell drums and play them just to hear their voice.
I’ve learned that everything has a voice.
Woods, buffalo, grass, and the mouse for my computer.
I drum on everything from the can of Pepsi I drink to my steering wheel.
In it my lifestyle not just my religion.
It connects me to everything like no other spiritual experience.
To answer the question, what does it feel like to be a Native American drummer?
I answer it this way.
What does it feel like when the wind kisses your cheeks?
What does it feel like on a hot summer day putting your bare feet in a pond?
What does it feel like to breathe, to feel, to create, and to have beauty both inside and out?
What does it feel like to finally find your twin flame, soul mate after a long search?
What is it like to be reborn, cleansed with new energy?
That is what it is like to drum. To hear the voices of everything and be part of it all.
This is EXCELLENT I love it, I love drums of all sorts too and tap as you do-on a desk, counter, drum itself when I can, a table, it's such a cool calming sound. Some find it annoying, I like you like the energy from it! Excellent piece -need more of these!
