After Going off to War and Being Incarcerated

I have just been freed from the prison.

I have just left the plantation,

Having earned enough money, finally,

To buy my own freedom.

I have just returned from years of war

In a foreign land

And I

Have just gotten off the ride.

I have died and I have retired

From a difficult life, a terrible job,

And I'm on my way to heaven in the land of milk and honey.

And what of it?  Well, as Woody Hays once said,

"Nothing that was ever easy was ever worth a damn."

In the hole

They give you nothing

But they do give you a bible.

And it's true that in the darkest dark

Comes the brightest light.

But that is all over.

That is all over now.

Now I am free.  And

I have this crush on this girl

Who works fast food down the street

But I will never say hello

Because I

Am not

A man, (The true measure

Of a man is the amount of responsibility he takes in his hand,)

And she is very young and beautiful.

I'm 40 and fat

And my best years are well behind me

But there's nothing better than

An average American life.

It's like heaven to me.

Lose it and you'll see it, too.

So give me an aged woman

With saggy tits

And wrinkles

And a beat up old car

And bills I can't pay.

Give me tedious boredom

On a Friday night

And a cat and the same shirt

To wear for a week straight.

Give me all of that.

Hell, just give me America.

Because, and you may not realize this,

There is simply nothing better.

To quote Earnest Hemingway,

"It's a wonderful world,

And well worth the fighting for."

A man can read that

But you have to experience it

To really understand it.

May you never truly understand a word of it, my friend.
