Stardust

Into the burning west, we sail,

the sinking Sun guiding us along our path.

Small clouds obscure the fiery star for a brief moment;

fading rays of light pierce the gray cotton balls in the sky.

A cascade of hues—orange to red—illuminates the distant sea,

slowly fading away into Nightfall.

As we gaze skywards, awe and wonder strike us unexpectedly.

A universe of stars, galaxies, and nebulae peer down upon us,

their seemingly infinite numbers twinkle and pulsate,

holes in the black blanket enshrouding the Planet.

From stardust, we came;

from the heavens, we descended,

atom by atom,

growing and evolving with the aid of Time.

Underneath such ethereal brilliance, we continue along,

living our lives and pushing forward with each new breath,

for one day, we shall return to our astral mothers in the sky—

from stardust, we came… and to stardust,

we will go.

Author's Notes/Comments:

Dedicated to Carl Sagan (RIP), for without his knowledge this poem wouldn't have as much meaning. Also dedicated to director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland; "Sunshine" is a phenomenal film. Keep doing what you do, you two. -JTB.
