You are a little too far,

just beyond the fingertips

where you are as visible

as air can make you.

Yet, my arms shorten and can 

not hold you. Can not touch you.

.

If I had an appetite I would take you

down whole. If I had a dream, you would

be the central character every night.

.

Yes, I will eat the usual, cabbage, beans,

rice, some meat, a little dairy to avoid

the antibiotification of my gut

but I can still hope you will come

if only to pass me a napkin, listen,

and become the substance 

in my dreams.
