.
All winter the body slows
down for snow, for ice,
for the drive to be cleared
by the guys who do
the lawn in summer.
.
All spring, the clean up
speeds things up, makes sweat
flow from beneath the head
band, tires muscles, forces
the heart to race.
.
Late spring, the gardens
gone fallow to await the hot
sun and envyless rainstorms
mixing the soil and the peat
with the weed and feed
and processed manure.
.
Early summer, the perennials
wonder where all the food
is coming from. Insects raise
bee brows at really huge roses
and giantine lilac.
.
Mid summer, the late blooming
lilies climb to challenge the porch
for height and sway. Just sway.
Roses in a second blooming
compete with the day lilies
for the best color now that
the tulips are gone.
.
Late summer, surprises
show up that were forgotten,
planted as ground cover
or seeds that take over
as conductor for the sounds
of blossoms opening
to hummingbirds.
.
Autumn, early to later, own
full colors that surprise gardeners
and make them smile. Zinnia
and Marigold shout at the air
daring the weather to cool.
Zebra grass, a breeze fan,
rises high to challenge
low tree branches turning
from green to no longer
green.
