I recall the pathway to her house as if the time has not passed at all, a sunny day, pure daylight caressing my skin as I walk across the sidewalk, from my granny’s house to hers. It was about 5:00pm when I left my granny’s home, the way through her house was always green, the bushes and the flowers of both of them where invading the sidewalk as if they were trying to make it look like “the secret garden”, even the butterflies liked to walk through there. I opened the gate, she had an orange three, that is the only three I remember the name of, she had just too many. I opened the door without even knocking, she knew I was coming, I had no need to knock, or ring at the door, not ever, and her doors were always open for me. I greeted at her, and there she was in the kitchen, boiling the orange leaves, making some tea and setting the cookies in a plate, “Galletas Marías”, she was expecting me for some tea quality time. “Here you are” she said and smiled, every inch of her had wrinkles, yet she managed to look beautiful and decent every day. She always wore a dress, a golden necklace, small, yet elegant, her golden earings, her golden rings, and her watch, the only thing that she wore that was not made of gold or fancy, it was just a plain metallic watch with a golden ring around the numbers and underneath that watch she always had a folded handkerchief, I still think that was really weird. She had everything in gold, white skin and a very dark hair for a woman of her age, if I could count the amount of gray hairs she had, I could say she only had ten. “Sit down now you” she said, “the tea is getting cooler, don’t sit like that, you must seat like a lady”, and then she showed me how to sit, with her knees together, and her left ankle behind the right, holding her hands in her legs. “Just like this little miss, very good.” She then stood up to take two cups, she served the tea, she put like a ton of sugar in each and hand in one to me. She took the remote control and set the tv in Televisa, she liked to watch tv novels all day long. We barely speak, I guess I never knew what to say, she seemed too old for me, I thought she already knew everything in the world, she must’ve been alive since the Mexican revolution. “Hey great grandma, how old are you? And why do you have that Kleenex under your watch?” She grinned; “Is not a kleenex, it is a handkerchief” she said a lady must never be asked how old is she when it is obvious she is old enough. “Ladies are always ladies, you must be treated as one, but you need to show every one you ought to be treated as one”. I remember that she also said it is important to comb your hair every day and to color your lips like a queen, always stay classy, ladies treat everyone nicely, be kind and the world would be kind to you.
So very descriptive and
So very descriptive and beautiful. It's as though you paint the story on the canvas of my mind and show me a pathway through your eyes. Even though I'm a younger man, I appreciate the story of your Granny; her morals and ways, especially her take on womanhood. I believe we have lost the pride that women had, and it's refreshing to hear the ways of the older generations. A wonderful story, I am interested to hear more. Keep writing!
