The scourging, the cold water on your hands,
Herod's odd humor, and the priests' demands;
the crowd's jeers when you said, "Behold the man";
the noontide darkness and the quick earthquake;
the whole affair brought to forgone conclusion---
the normal Roman way---by execution:
no cause to fret, you did the best you can.
Now let this dreadful difficult day be a
regretful incident you need not take
with you on your return to Caesarea.
One Galilaean, late of Nazareth---
and with two thieving scoundrels---put to death:
few will remember, fewer will inquire,
just one more problem solved for Rome's empire.
