Little Angel

Look at this child

An angel whose wings have been broken

Broken so many times

She no longer believes it possible to fly

Have you ever looked in her eyes

To see the pain that swims so deeply

You can see the hurt

It falls with the tears that course down her cheeks

Has this angel never smiled

Has anything gone right in her world

How can one so small

Experience so much

Where is the joy

Why does no one see

Here is a perfect angel

Lying in the dust broken and bruised

She wonders why

Life has been so cruel

Why no one cares

Whether she lives or dies

She spends her days

Hiding in a corner

Pretending to be invisible

Hoping to avoid the next blow

Why God, have you let this little one suffer so

Her burden is too much to bear

For soon, far too soon

She'll cease to be here

No longer able to feel the blows

That rain even after she has gone

Her broken wings at last mended

She'll fly far from here, finally free

Author's Notes/Comments:

Imagine a small, beautiful girl. Big blue eyes staring up at you. Now imagine that same girl crumpled up in a ball, tears streaming down her face as her father takes out his drunken rage on her. Here is your little angel.
