When the sun fell into the fields of the great wide plains
Misty eyes watched the golden waves drift far in a gentle way
To a far distant place few get to die knowing they knew
I thought as the wrinkles dug their trenches in my face
I’d somehow escape the barbed-wire fences holding me in place
Far, far away from the distant place I’ve longed so long to know
It took a hard heartbreak to learn a hard-learned lesson through
That hurt is sometimes the best catalyst to
Close the gap between a distant place and who you’ve got to let loose
I can’t say I’ve learned how to count miles instead of inches
But, I do know now the difference between arrogance and wisdom
And they’re as far apart as that fabled distant place and a pair of old running shoes
As the bird arose from the sharp, fiery ashes
The dusty plumes of down surpassed us
And, drifted high toward the distant places the waxy wings once flew
The place where you and I once stood
Feet so grounded in the earthy dust of sod and wood
A far distant place the past took away like gentle rolling waves of grain shaking loose
