Memento

I gave away my lucky memento

For the thoughts of a stranger and a cup of coffee

I know it’s strange, but sometimes it’s easier for me

To talk with Mr. and Mrs. John and Jane Doe

I just wish I hadn’t lost my lucky memento

And, now the ground is rumbling beneath my feet

And, thunder’s in the sky

As buffalo go charging away

Nickels fall from my eyes

Baseball cards and bubblegum balls

The extent of my thoughts until I was grown

When the back of a nickel was still where the buffalo would roam

That was, until that young child grew strong and tall

I just wish I still had that bubblegum ball

I close my eyes and remember days of hard-learned lessons and ice-cream trucks

When the biggest worry was having a big enough bucket to catch the rain

But, now the ground is rumbling beneath my feet

And, thunder’s in the sky

As buffalo go charging away

Nickels fall from my eyes
