Tower of Babel

Folder:
To: Me From: Me

Ambitious old city,
And tower called Babel.
Along the plain Shinar,
Built to reach God's portal.

Afraid to fall like you,

So here on Earth I stayed.
Not daring to soar high,
No Babel tower head.

Unfair I badly crashed,
To grounds I never left.
My peace has turned to ash,
As cares pushed me to rise.

Doesn't count if one's dreams,

Fly as high as Heaven.
Dreams die first, like my aims,
From the mounds I made haven.

Were those voices I hear?

Or echoes from my past?
God, I can't decipher,
Our language spoken last.

My tower of Babel,

We were but ignorant.
Your lofty dreams crumbled,
As did my humble chant.

Your plains, where I was named,

Like you, I should have dreamed.
And fell like a Tower tall,
Screaming loudly as I fall.

Screamed of a common language,
Of faith, of love, of hope...
Still louder would God's voice,
Splitting tongues we can't cope.

My Tower of Babel,
For you I'm scared to fly.
Fallen Tower of Babel,
To linguists you still lie.

Author's Notes/Comments:

I was named after the plain of Shinar, where the Tower of Babel was built.

Up until this point in the Bible, the whole world had one language. The people became skilled in construction and decided to build a city with a tower that would reach to heaven. HUMAN WISDOM and PRIDE drove them to make a name for themselves and to prevent their city from being scattered. God perceived their intentions that this "stairway to heaven" would lead the people away from Him. As a result, God confused their language, causing them to speak different languages so they would not understand each other, thus the tower was not finished. By doing this, God thwarted their plans. He also scattered the people of the city all over the face of the earth.

Genesis 11:1-9
