RAGGEDY MAN

As a child she

clutched that ever so dingy

raggedy doll

It symbolized comfort & security

in every sense of the words

never lettin' up on her grip

Even when mama told her it

was too dirty, too old, and would make her sick

she still would not let go

until one rainy evening while

she slumbered silently her

grip loosened and the raggedy

doll fell 2 the floor

Her mama feelin' it was the perfect time

scooped it up

when the child awoke lookin'

for her raggedy doll

her mama told her

"Baby you slept all night W/0 that raggedy doll

in a thunderstorm no less

you're a big girl now

you do not need that raggedy doll no more."

that was the end of that

the little girl

is all grown up still learnin' the

ways of the world she

is twenty somethin' U know

and seems she's forgotten about

what her mama told her

about her raggedy doll

cuz now she went and found a replacement

this man she got

started out her chocolate knight in shining armor

he treated her right

put her up on stage

made her the spotlight

dicked her down

w/multiple o's every night

friends they were first

so U know they wuz tight

so she held onto that man

gracious and benevolent

damn she just knew

he was heaven sent

but..yeah that's right

but U know he started to change

said she was becoming psychotic

U know deranged

started callin' her all kinds of nasty names

liar 2 name a few

and her peeps around her already knew

that she was his true angel

stickin' through thin and would hold

him down through thick

he had her in a lovesick kind of check

so u know he began

2 tiptoe

on the d'lo

and trick with

the skeez-ho's

still feedin' her with

"u know U my numero uno"

time moved on yet she did not

those names and angry ways he

began 2 display did not stop

the acknowledgement of only negative attention

was what the street psychologists' called

the art of projection

that chocolate knight

became her biggest fright

blowin' up w/anger

her no longer the

spotlight

but the center

and though she knew of his infidelities

she refused

2 clearly see that their

relationship was filled w/too much

turmoil, no love just pain

til' one day she headed out on the train

2 see the city & cleanse her brain

had a conversation w/a brotha

who wanted to know

where her boo was at

and she replied @ home w/his

girlfriend

he nodded his head in disbelief asked again

and they began to speak

on the lives they had

about how she was so in love

with this man

emotions runnin' high

of course she started

to cry

pain falling from

her weary eyes

she realized that she

had been holdin' on

like she had as a child

she was intelligent, beautiful

and downright funny

didn't need to be takin'care of

she made her own money

He'd taken care of her emotional and physical needs

but his own emotions

were not in check and ran ocean floor deep

couldn't admit his love for her just yet

she stated her case

the brotha listened on

her record was scratchin'

the same part playin' over

in her sad blues song

exhausted & drained from deep conversation

w/ the brotha on the train

who new she was somethin' special

he couldn't begin to understand why

she being all that she was

from what he had witnessed

could and would prolong that pain and misery

and in words

and with silent soul searchin' looks

he let her know

that she'd be a'ight

and 2 not look

but 2 wait on

Mr. Right

they ceased talking

it began to thunder and rain

she propped her head up against the window pane of that train

and commenced to fall fast asleep,

unballed her tightly clenched hand

to begin 2 let go of that

raggedy man.
