Our Snowman

In my family decorations are always important, they are colorful, bright and ignite certain warmth that can make holidays memorable. But holidays don’t last forever, just like nothing really lasts forever. When holidays end, decorations are taken away but the memories we make stay impregnated to us for a really long time. A holiday I never want to forget is Christmas Eve. Whether you are angry or sad, miserable or depressed if it is Christmas a bright smile has to cross your face. The whole family gathers to celebrate it, and the one decoration that has always been present since I was a child, is our famous snowman. That snowman sees it all, our laughter our talks, my grandmother cooking her delicious turkey, my cousins looking out the window waiting for Santa Claus to arrive, my grandfather smoking a cigarette and my aunts and mother playing creative Christmas games. Whenever I see my mother finally taking out the snowman from the basement I can feel pure joy of the days to come. Now that I think about it, seeing that small snowman always triggers the memories that are locked deep inside of me. It is like it makes me travel back in time to those endless fun nights. But not only joy and happiness could the snowman see, longing and sadness also comes with it. For the snowman has seen people of the family suddenly disappear. Some that went to live elsewhere, some who passed away, and even so the snowman sheds no tears. Because it can only store good memories that’s why whenever I see the snowman I can never, not be happy. And even though I say nothing lasts forever I can’t help but think there is only one precious thing that really does. Memories, they connect you to people, places, and important experiences. Oh, and well maybe the snowman will last forever too, it seems like it will always be there as soon as the weather turns chilly and we all start wearing winter clothes. If ever I am in a position when I have to tell someone my story, I would tell him or her to take a look at the snowman, take a good careful look and you´ll see it. Our snowman doesn’t talk, eat, walk, or breathe. But it is a trigger to our most precious memories; therefore it will always be precious to us.
