"La Vie en Rose" and a Hug

Stories

There was once a girl who walked down the streets loving everyone walking around her. She would have found it easy to give a hug to a stranger simply because the stranger might have looked rather sad. She was no angel, certainly, but she had compassion. It was enough for her to have compassion with a strong probability and capability to do something about it.

Her family, needless to say, was a priority.

Heading to work, her colleagues had a similar treatment. Still no angel, she made mistakes, they made mistakes, but she considered them a second family; after all, they spent multiple hours with each other, hours that culminated to weeks, months, years. How could she not love them, defend them, listen to them, and simply, be there when she was needed? How could she not see them in the best light possible?

But life is, after all, just life. It bites, then glitters, enchants, and then crushes again; life does come to a point to bite her finger, using the beloved people as the great tools.

And now it's not the question of why. She plays no victim roles. She has the eye to accept and analyze. But damaged she is, no question about it. Once something is broken, the scattered pieces will take time to rejoin, if ever. And more, the fear that she might have done the same damage to someone else, without her knowing, kills her.

Sure, there is no time for falling apart, but sure too, she wants to be herself again. She wants to give people a hug again, only that she can't give hugs anymore to humans that might not be deserving, to real strangers, strangers who could bite.

She wants her rosy world back, knowing very well that the color she gave it is just a mix of her own doing. But perhaps rosy isn't rosy unless you mix some red blood and white snow in it. Maybe 'rosy' is a true thing, joining the opposites together. The pain and the peace.

She wants to smile at people who have caused the hurt, without forcing the smile. Or thinking in good intentions about them, without any pretension. She wants to leave the bitterness alone, if only possible.

And in an instant she remembers, that if this is not the challenge, then nothing is. She remembers a saying that she admires, that explains, among other quotes, how it is the same with everybody. And how it should be. A saying that helps her get through the days ahead, fly over the bitterness while building wings, on the way down.

"If we listened to our intellect, we'd never have a love affair. We'd never have a friendship. We'd never go into business, because we'd be cynical. Well, that's nonsense. You've got to jump off cliffs all the time and build your wings on the way down." ~ Ray Bradbury
