Recipe For Recovery

November 22, 2011
By Taylor Springs

First, you absolutely must
Decide what you want to create
An empty soul
A happy girl
Or beautifully natural
With a side of erosion
To bake, what I’d like to be
I need 47 and a half
Buckets of forgiveness
To let go of the pain
To wash away the abuse
To free myself, from me
And six forget-me-nots
With a heavy dose
Of how to forget
Four batches of tears
All dried up
Band-Aids and frosting
Because nobody’s perfect
Do not cry,
Or frown,
Or scold
Everything goes wrong, sometimes
I’m gonna need paper
And a gallon of ink
The dish will never be complete
Without these
And a smile
Don’t forget the smile
This absolutely must
Completely be
Really, truly legit
You will have to search
Long and hard for this
If it is fake
Even in the least
This dish will be so sour
So test it
Kick it, hit it, tap it
Cut it to bits
If
And only if
It holds steadfast and true
Then whisper “I love you”
And mix this smile in
You must cook it for
Several long and brutal years
You’ll start over, and begin again
But finally
Someday
In the middle of the night
You’ll awake to the final
Beep
Beep
Beep
Of the stove
And the microwave
It seems as if
Every single alarm clock
And smoke detector
In the house is going off
With shaky hands
And tear stained cheeks
And a smile
Worn, but beautiful
A masterpiece of a girl
Emerges from the cage
She long ago deemed
Her home, her comfort zone
Bright lights, big smiles
She unfolds her knees
Opens her arms
To embrace, this new life
She blooms
For the first time
For the last time
Finally, I’m here
