I peered into the seemingly endless cavern that served as the beast’s lair.  As I had hoped, there was not a living thing in sight.  I studied my surroundings: the white marble floor stained brown with the lifeblood of the monster’s victims, the assortment of sickly yellow bones, and the small mountain of precious metals and gems that almost filled the chamber.

After an eternity I stepped into the open, fully expecting the horror to emerge and drive his razor sharp claws through my flesh.  But the crimson death did not appear and I rushed to the treasure of ages past.

I was to the hoard before I noticed the hair bristling at the back of my neck.  A shadow slid across the floor and my mouth was filled with the taste of bile.  I looked up to see the magnificent animal descending.

He landed not far from me and turned to face me.  My world exploded in pain as my ribcage was shattered by hit tail.  I fell to the ground, writhing in agony.  A sound came to my ears and I realized he was laughing.  The dragon approached and with him came the acrid smell of sulfur.  I closed my eyes…

Author's Notes/Comments: 

written 10/26/94, yeah, it's not a poem, I still like it. And no, there are no hidden meanings, it's just about a thief and a really big nasty dragon.
