THAT SECOND STEP
(T. Beechey)
They always talked of what lie ahead
But they should've walked that path instead
"Just wait and see," he'd tell us all
"Very soon we'll be the ones to call."
"You'll be behind In all our dust,"
She'd always remind each one of us
They spoke about what the future holds
Then along came doubt and the trail went cold
He had a dream, she had a plan
But neither seemed to understand
That dreams awake and plans aren't kept
When neither takes that second step
He was doing this, she was doing that
But they always missed and both fell flat
"We'll bounce right back," he'd always say
"We'll get on that track, this time we'll stay!"
"Just a wrong turn," she'd smile and shrug
"But now we've learned and we're gonna chug"
She was going here, he was going there
It soon became clear they were headed nowhere
She had a dream, he had a plan
But fate had deemed both a sham
Since dreams awake and plans aren't kept
When neither takes that second step
They always said that they'd go far
But each end was dead and look where they are
Each took the blame of the other's faults
Brought by the shame cloaked in assaults
Of the verbal type till it made no sense
Each coming gripe fell upon the fence
Now separated and in disguise
From the hatred and their own eyes
They had a dream, they had a plan
Now undone themes divide their lands
Cause dreams awake and plans aren't kept
When neither takes that second step
