DID ANYONE HEAR AT ALL?
(T. Beechey)
I've often wondered if sayings I've heard actually ever really occurred
I never thought I'd have the chance to witness such a circumstance
While walking in the woods one day, I came upon a tree that lay
Across the path that I was on and it was then this thought did dawn:
"Did anyone hear at all
"When that tree came to fall
"And if there was no one near
"Was there anything to hear?"
I've walked this trail for a year or more and I'd never noticed this tree before
Deep inside,I thought it was wrong that I never saw it when it was strong
And stretching upwards towards the sky, I thought of the birds who'd no longer fly
To nests they'd build for eggs to spawn and it was then this thought did dawn:
"Did anyone hear at all
"When that tree came to fall
"And if there was no one near
"Was there anything to hear?"
As I gazed upon this fallen oak with so many limbs and branches broke
I wondered if, in an earlier time, children had spent a day to climb
Up and down its majestic trunk --- now here it was,a lifeless hunk
With just about all its folliage gone and it was then this thought did dawn:
"Did anyone hear at all
"When that tree came to fall
"And if there was no one near
"Was there anything to hear?"
Was it a storm that caused its demise? Perhaps a lightning bolt from the skies
Brought it crashing to the ground...I deeply sighed, then turned around
And walked on back to where I came, back to the house which bears my name
I had just stepped foot back on my lawn and it was then this thought did dawn:
"Did anyone hear at all
"When that tree came to fall
"And if there was no one near
"Was there anything to hear?"
That night in bed I laid awake, thoughts of the tree I couldn't shake
What if I had been the tree? Would anybody have heard me?
I'm certain that I would yell if,to the ground,I suddenly fell
I closed my eyes and began to yawn and it was then this thought did dawn:
"Did anyone hear at all
"When that tree came to fall
"And if there was no one near
"Was there anything to hear?"
