MEMORY LANE
(T. Beechey)
I started out on a sunny day, took a wrong turn and lost my way
That's when the clouds began to roll and left me stranded in my stroll
All I'd known became a farce as the paths to choose grew so sparse
Eventually, just one remained and the signpost read MEMORY LANE
How did I get to Memory Lane?
I followed the teardrops mixed with the rain
Where recollections leave nary a stain
That's how I got to Memory Lane
I turned to a stranger I'd never known and saw his reflection was my own
But now a sadness lined his face because of something I couldn't place
The only thing that was staying clear was that somehow I landed here
In the deepest recesses of my brain on a little street called Memory Lane
And I find myself wandering down Memory Lane
With my only companion, the distant refrain
Of a childhood theme so simple and plain
As I wander along down Memory Lane
The air has taken on a chill as I kept walking, yet stayed still
Each step I took was in reverse --- might be a blessing, could be a curse
Images flash before my eyes --- could be truth but probably lies
There was no longer distance to gain once I stepped foot on Memory Lane
(INSTRUMENTAL BREAK)
I looked around for simply a sign that, though I was lost,I'd be fine
All I received were vacant stares from others who had wandered there
So ,arm in arm, we wander through all that's old that's now anew
Now flowing with each current and grain which led us onto Memory Lane
My home is now on Memory Lane
But you can't get here by bus or train
Or subway or car or even a plane
You have to wander onto Memory Lane
Yes,it started out on a sunny day and I was soaking up each ray
When all the clouds gathered round and, on Memory Lane, I was found
When I reach the end of Memory Lane, I'll no longer know pleasure from pain
And, as my time proceeds to wane, I'll bid farewell to Memory Lane
