NO DIFFERENCE

NO DIFFERENCE
(T. Beechey)

There used to be a pasture where trees and flowers grew
I figured it would last for a memory or two
Now in between the buildings weaves an interstate
But those images keep yielding to a time that couldn't wait

There really is no difference
Between what used to be
And everything that's here since
It's all the same to me
The only thing that changes
Is the places where we stand
As the sequence rearranges
The way that it was planned

The reflection that is given does not comprehend
Instead, you choose to live in the premise of pretend
There's no such thing as ages and the tables never turn
The writing on the pages neither fades nor burns

There really is no difference
Between what used to be
And everything that's here since
It's all the same to me
The only thing that changes
Is the places where we stand
As the sequence rearranges
The way that it was planned

Just cinders, ash, and rubble is all that's left to view
Of years of toil and trouble that countless souls went through
Each wisp of smoke that rises represents a dream
And time wears no disguises --- in our eyes there's still a gleam

There really is no difference
Between what used to be
And everything that's here since
It's all the same to me
The only thing that changes
Is the places where we stand
As the sequence rearranges
The way that it was planned
