I didn't know him well,
In fact, we never met
But I feel as though I've known him...oh,
I really can't tell you yet
Cause I know we'll meet on that golden street,
And I'll greet him with a smile,
Perhaps he'll nod or even applaud,
We might even chat a while
And, if we do, I'll say yes, it's true,
Down on Earth you were missed,
If we asks by whom did share this gloom,
Then I will present a list
I'll say, "Josie and Goldie and Sylvia's mom,
"And, of course, that boy named Sue,
"The Silver-Dollar Queen, even the Homework Machine,
"Was feeling pretty blue."
"And so many more," I will implore,
"It's been rough since you've been gone."
Then Shel might say, in a laughing way,
"At least my words lived on!"
And, yes, they do and from me and you,
To my friend I've yet to know,
Thank you, Godspeed, and truly indeed,
You've helped me learn and grow.
Shel Silverstein is,was, and always be my greatest source of inspiration.
