U AND I
(T. Beechey)
U and I were just letters hangin' out on Alphabet Row
I hung out near the middle and U was on down below
I was friends with J and K, U liked to watch T V
So they never saw each other except occasionally
Guitars and suits brought U and I together for a while
And Buicks and even druids made both U and I smile
But, other than that, U and I always stayed apart
Though each lived in the other's thoughts and soul and heart
U and I, I and U
Letters just doin' what letters do
I know it sounds funny, but it's true
U and I, I and U
I and U, U and I
Down on Alphabet Row just gettin' by
Maybe, someday...well, they can try
I and U, U and I
Every time U was under, I was always inside
When U was up, I was instead somewhere itchin' to hide
Wherever U usually was, I was invariably not
So U and I never got to see each other quite a lot
One day, though, U was told something about cuisine
And that was about the happiest that U had ever been
When I learned, too, he jumped for joy, so very excited was he
"At last, " he said, "both U and I will be together, you see!"
U and I, I and U
Letters just doin' what letters do
I know it sounds funny, but it's true
U and I, I and U
I and U, U and I
Down on Alphabet Row just gettin' by
Maybe, someday...well, they can try
I and U, U and I
The day finally came and U and I stood side-by-side at last
But everythin' moved too quickly and time went by so fast
At the end of the day, U and I were back where they belonged ---
Or at least until the bluebirds begin to sing their song
I quite often thinks about U and wonders how she's been
U knows someday that she and I will be together again
As long as there's buildings in ruin and fruit to guide the fly
There will always be a moment to share for U and I
