He’s smiling at me, unrelenting
Watching as I walk home
With a wobbled gait he
Follows. Like a duckling
With nowhere else to go
My pace quickens, footsteps
Become frantic, but
I do not want to leave him.
The thought makes my
Heart ache and my breath
Quicken. Sounds dim and
Images blur, a kaleidoscope of colours.
Masochistic and hopeless-
His smile, his smile
Saves me yet the solitude
Of the house still
Beckons. Tempting my
Conscience. A desperate
Wail calls my name and
I stop running.
