How We Met

Short Stories

I stood at my open window one late morning. The sun was shining, the grass was green as green can be. I had looked at the sky and there wasn't a cloud in sight. I took a deep breath in, exhaled and thought about what I was going to do. When the idea came to me I didn't hesitate for second to do otherwise.
I went and grabbed the keys for my old ford truck. Put on my boots and headed out the door. I closed the door behind me and locked it. Down the patio steps I went to begin my trip. I had decided to go down to my hometown for the day.
I went to my truck and proped the door open. I hopped up on the seat and closed the door. I started the engine and before I left, I rolled down the window, grabed the ciggerettes I keep in my visor. I took one out and got a lighter from my pocket. I lit it then drove off.
Instead of taking the highway like usual, I went on the back roads. Decided to take a nice scenic route. About quarter to half mile up the road some idiot in a Jaguar cut me off. After serving a bit and hitting the brakes, finally the truck straightened out. Boy was I pissed off.
Some how I eneded up passing by that guy who cut me off. How? you may ask. Well a cop who actually had some brains pulled him over. I hope he got a huge fine. Driving like that could kill someone.
So now I'm about halfway to Brantford. I look in my mirror and I see a little green blur gaining on me. I thought to myself "It can't be that guy again".
Well sure enough its the guy with the Jaguar. He catchs up and passes me again.
So I thought enough is enough. I start going faster to try to catch to him. It took a bit of time but I caught up. Before I realized we were in a small town. I look ahead and see a girl cross the street.
Right then and there I knew what was going to happen. I had enough room to slow down. The Jaguar hit the poor girl. I drove over and stopped the truck to check on the girl. The Jaguar drove away.
I bet all the guy saw was my middle finger in his mirror. I rushed over to the girl on the road. She had long ebony hair, ruby lips and a figure that would make any guy go crazy for. I checked her pulse and she was still alive. I took my cell from my pocket and called the police.
The police showed up with two cruisers and an ambulance. As soon as the ambulance stoppd, the medical team bolted to the girl. A few police officers stayed behind to get my statement. I told them everything I knew about the Jaguar. I just left out the part where I decided to go after him.
I gave one of the officers my business card incase they needed more information.
The medical team got the girl in the ambulance and got her stable. One of the trained professionals came to me after the officers left. He said to me "That was some quick actions son, any later and she wouldn't have made it. Do you know her personally?" I replied " Thank you and no I haven't seen her before". " Well we have her stabilized now. She will most likely pull through. Though there is alot of tissue damage and internal hemorrhaging. If you'd like you can meet us at the hospital. I'm pretty sure she'd like to meet her hero". The medic said to me. I gave off a slight chuckle and said in response " I'd be glad to ". I went back to my truck and headed off towards the hospital.
I followed the ambulance to the hospital it was going to. Once I parked the truck, I headed for the entrance. I went up to the reception desk and said " Hello, my name is Anthony Bardet. I am looking for a girl that just came in. She was in a terrible car accident". There was a slight pause before the receptionist answered. "Yes, Mr.Anderson, the lead medic had the driver radio in about you. She'll be in room one-thirteen. Though you cannot go in yet. The docor would like to run a few tests. You're welcome to sit in the waiting room till visiotrs are allowed in".
I thanked the receptionist for help and sat in the waiting room. A few hours passed by and I was about to fall asleep. At that moment a man in a white over coat approached me. I assumed he was the doctor. I stood up from the chair and faced who could only be the doctor.
"Mr. Bardet? " He said to me. " Yes that's me". I responded. " I just wanted to inform you that Gabrielle is awake and is doing fine. You can go and introduce yourself if you wish." the doctor explained. " Thank you doctor, I shall do so." I replied. With a turn of his heel the doctor left the waiting room to return to his duties.

I walked down the hall to find the elevator. It wasn't until the very end of the hall that I had got to the elevator. When the elevator reached the main floor, I got in to take it up to the first floor. When the doors open I couldn't but feel nervous. Alot of questions went through my mind. Would she like me? Would she thank me? What if she blames me for what happened. All I could do was go in and see what will happen. I walked out of the elevator and to the room. Before I entered I had to take a few deep breaths.
I knocked on the door lightly but loud enough to be heard. All I heard was a sweet voice that said "Come in". I turned the door knob and stepped in the room. A quizzical look had produced upon her bruised but lovely face. " My name is Anthony Bardet. I am the one who called the police and told them what happened". I had said to her. " Thank you. You are very kind to to have done what you did. My name is Gabrielle Rueso " she responded as best she could due to the pain. " I should be going before your family comes." I said to her. There was a moment of silence and the air became still. " Please stay. My family is back in spain. I don't think they'll be here anytime soon." she said with a hint of sorrow.
I walked over and sat in the chair next to the bed. We talked for what seemed like hours on end. It was about nine or ten in the evening. I checked my watch and looked at Gabrielle. " It's getting late. I don't think the doctors would appriciate me staying any longer". I didn't want to say it but truth be told I was getting tired my self. Plus I was still an hour from home.
"Oh don't worry about that. I wish you would stay the night. I don't feel comfortable staying alone here". She responded. What could I say to that besides " It would be my honor to watch over you tonight". After I said that, Gabrielle just smiled and closed her eyes. Nothing more needed to be said. I sunk back in my chair and closed my eyes.
That is how your mother and I met. I said to my son and daughter. My son looked at me and said " wow that's a neat story". My daughter, Ezra stood up, walked over to Gabrielle and myself and then gave both of us a hug. Ezra walked back to where she was sitting.
I gandered over at Gabrielle and by the look on her face I could tell thats one of her favourite stories. I leaned over and kissed her on the cheek.
" Alright time to wash up for dinner. After dinner I'd like for you to do your homework". I said to my children. Ezra didn't protest. " But dad, Johnny and Devon are meeting over at Pauls for a gaming night" my son exclaimed. " Now Desmond, when you finish your homework I'll drive you over. Besides if you get it done now, you'll have the whole weekend to do some gaming". I said back to him. " Alright" Desmond said with a huff. The kids ran off to do there homework.
The night came quickly. Desmond went to his friends and Ezra stayed home. I decided to call it an early night. I went up to the bedroom and put my night wear on. I climbed into bed. All I could think about is the story I told the kids. How that story has a special place in my life and how it has good moral to it. Even if I did do something completely stupid. Then again I did fix the situation.
Though I think the moral would probably have to be, that no matter how bad the situation is, you have the power to change the outcome. Like the saying goes " Every cloud has a silver lining".

THE END
