She,He,They,I
By: Amariel Ross
She said “I understand how you feel.”
I ask “Are you colored?”
He said “I don’t see color,I see people.”
I ask “If I weren’t black would you say that?”
She said “My brother was killed by a police officer”
I ask “Was your brother’s death justified?”
He said “I fear for my life also.”
I ask “Why?”
She said “We will become one.”
I say “When there is a yield sign in the world.”
He said “You’ll be justified one day.”
I say “justice is an understatement.”
She said “race isn’t looked upon here.”
I ask “What’s our judgement then?”
He said “I’m scared too.”
I ask “Why?”
They said “Your black is beautiful.”
I say “In my mind, not yours.”
They said “Why do you want to be black?”
I say “The same reason you don't want to be black.”
They say “color”
They mean unaccepted.
They say “African American”
They mean a disgrace.
I say “color”
I mean normal.
I say “African American”
I mean different.
