Sitting in a crowded restaurant
Eating my dinner
Surrounded but alone
Over the din of voices, silverware, and plates
My ears pluck out the sound of the song that's playing on the radio
Suddenly, I'm taken back in time
I see a place I've not seen in years
Coal stove in the corner
Wooden rocking chair beside it
Old, faded couch across the room
At one end of the room is the TV
And beside it, the 8 track player
I see a woman, dark hair, late 40's
And a scrawny blonde-headed boy, first maybe second grade
They're dancing and laughing
Don't have a care in the world
The only thing that matters is the sound of "Jambalaya" coming from the radio
My mom is on the couch, laughing and watching
My papaw comes down the hall to see the commotion
Then the song ends, and "Your Cheatin' Heart" begins
And just like that I'm brought back to the present
Back to living my life and trying to feel my way through this adult world
I'm thankful, though, for those little memories
Such perfect moments in time
I'll go on about my day
But I look forward to the next dance with my Granny
