You were never there,
I was never me
Even air, trapped under
the rocks, can’t breathe.
So I picked up the stones
One at a time
'till my pockets were heavy
and I found a rock that shined,
but it was never really crossed my mind
that I had found mine.
And then one by one,
And two by two,
I skipped the rocks
On top of the ocean, blue.
And a light refracted
Striking my eyes
Somewhere inside
My perfect vision died.
I was never there,
You were never me,
All the air in the world
Was waiting to be breathed.
And I could make out a sail easily
Yet faint, fuzzy white
Straining and squinting
Barely out of my sight.
I never knew the sky
Held so much weight,
I never knew the waters
Were held at bay
On the thinnest string
But that’s what angels sing.
So I decided today
To throw all my precious stones away
Into those waters held at bay
And to wait and see
If any of my rocks
Will return back to me.
