we stepped inside (hand in hand)
and the rain stopped, abruptly
as if to tell us how wrong we were to try and get away
all the while building up water in the clouds
for the next time we held hands to step outside
you and i hibernated for a week (hands unclasped)
inside looking out
as the sun shown down around us
protected from water
and divided from each other
you noticed after a week (hands on your hips)
that our plants
turned from green to brown
our flowers
from perky to less than excited
to be in our garden
they were begging us
for a future
i petitioned you for a friend
and handed you your shoes
we joined hands
and stepped out
into the rain
