Ode to Daniel

Of the hardest years of your life

You stood with your head in the air all tough

Nothing stopped you

Because everything was enough

The men around you were mean

You were scared

Of all the things that were seen

It might have taunted you, but it was soon over

Your mother woke you from a nightmare

You were sweating in her arms

She wouldnt let any men near

There would be no harm

Daniel, you went around

Saying "This shouldn't be happening"

And something must be said

You wouldn't let this happen

Not ever again

You were the courageous one

You wanted to stop Hitler

You were bright as the sun

Though something had to be done

You saw kids and grown ups enter the camp in a line

What a horrible sight

Of the thought in your mind

So mare

And you said "Please let this be over"

Author's Notes/Comments:

I wrote this in the 7th grade in 1999 and it we were reading a book Daniel's Story, about this young boy who lives through the Holocaust and the assignment was to write and ode to the boy Daniel. This was actually my first poem as well.
