Last night
A student from my school, named Lovell
Was killed.
Rest in peace, I can't imagine how his mother feels, I
Was writing an entirely different piece, on the very last line until my
Phone buzzed, new text saying Lovell was shot and killed, why?
Couldn't believe or see the reason and you know what, I'm still blind.
And I don't wanna be healed.
But what do rappers care, right?
Get dough, onto the next show, they don't have to care...right?
Fuck that.
They should.
Because I'm SO sick of rich, influential "emcees" only giving fucks about groupies.
Probably thinking that they're tight, but that's probably why they're pussies.
How they, bang their Uzi, go ham with their toolie,
So irresponsible with power like they never saw a Spider-Man movie.
And I can drop names.
A pissed off attempt to stop us from repeating history.
But does that make it a-gain? I
Think not, to get rid of this deep rot
We need more thinkers to make it in mainstream hip hop.
I pray Kendrick continues,
Pray Cole continues,
Pray Immortal Technique ain't the next one to sleep, so...
That's all I gotta say, again, peace to Lovell
Family going through hell, my two cents, I wish em well.
The message? I don't care if rappers are supposed to be unstoppable.
I just wish more of them were socially responsible.
Author's Notes/Comments:
Gonna put this into context only because I feel it's necessary to understand. Earlier in 2014, I was involved in a local spoken word poetry event. The day of the event, I learned that same morning that a student I knew from my school was murdered the night before. I was literally shaking. I felt I had to do something. So I ripped up what I had written originally. This is what then poured out.
