In the window sits the candle
burning brightly in the night
and that candle will stay lighted
till the early morning light
Many years ago he ask her
keep the candle burning, hon
and whenere I'm lost or lonely
I can find my way back home
For he was a traveling preacher
and he preached the Word of God
and he read the words of Jesus
as he traveled oer this sod
his old black coat was tattered
it had seen it's better day
and his bible he kept open
for he read along the way
And when he left on Sunday morning's
he'd say, this afternoon I will return
but if perchance I get in late
just let the candle burn
so she'd sit it in the window
a special candle, snowy white
and she'd keep it always burning
till she saw him in it's light
Oh he was her most beloved
she had known him all her life
and she was so proud and honored
when she was ask to be his wife
and many years they'd been together
through the good times and the bad
for God had never given them children
which made them both so sad
and each time he went away to preach
be it for a week or just a day
she would light the brightest candle
so coming home, he'd find his way'
so the years just rolled on swiftly
bringing joy into their lives
and happy days rolled into fruitful years
for the preacher and his wife
But sometime's the path goes very dark
within this world of sin
so she kept his world well lighted
for her love had always been
and so as he mounted up his old faithful horse
said he'd be gone a day or two
and in his mind, he thought
that he'd buy her that piece of special cloth
that she'd admired
for she waned it, he knew
but as he traveled down that dusty road
singing an old church song
some one shot him in the back
as he slowly rode along
Now for the last time he had gone away
and this time he'll not return
so that candles is kept burning
and she cried with much concern
And now this lady dressed in black
keeps the candle burning bright
to light his way back home to heaven
in the darkness of the night
and his old and worn out bible
with hte verses underlined in red
she keep's open on the table
so she can read the things he'd said
now a snowy candle, always lighted
in the window sits alone
to help his spirit now departed
find the right pathway back home
