She wore it on her slender neck
she wore it there for years
she wore it there though hurt and pain
and through unending tears
A long lost love had given it
upon the day he went away
he fastioned it upon her neck
and there it always stayed
He promised on the day he left
that he'd return and soon
and take her for his blushing bride
they'ed be wed in early June
She did not see him ere again
for he did not return
the letter said he'd bravely died
they sent the purple heart he'd earned
They buried him in Italy
he ner again came home
and so she spent her lonely days
sad and all alone
She did not ever love again
and so slowly went the years
and each day she'd hold the locket close
and shed her bitter tears
The days were long, the years crept on
now silver laced her hair
and tho deep lines surround her face
she knows that he still cares
For they shared each others heart and soul
for love for them was sweet
and tho he never ccame again
she knew someday they'ed meet
And Oh, the joy that day would bringt
when they held each other tight
and there'd be tears of happiness
for them, then things would be alright
So slowly now went all the hours
as she sat there in her chair
and she'd hold the locket to her breast
and wish that he were there
She had no kin or friends at all
they called her 'old recluse'
she wished that she could die and leave
for life, she had no use
And through the mirror in her room each day
she'd see that golden locket shine
and she'd look at the photos of their youth
and think of love devine
Her neck was old and wrinkled now
but still the locket nestled there
for it kept also, inside it's guarded clasp
his lock of sable hair
And on that day her life had flown
as she lay in the casket there
the golden locked gleamed upon
a soldier standing tall and fair
And lo, now her soul had been set free
and that locket beamed and shown
for it had led him to his long lost love
to take her safely home
