A DREAM' OR WAS IT

I awoke from cold dreams of torment

long before the sweet morning light

to see an angel there before me

staanding still in the midst of the night

My brain now blank and dull from sleeping

just could not phantom what I see

for here in the quiet of the midnight

she stood just looking at me

Her wings were white tipped with silver

with sparkling eyes shining  so bright

and over her head was a halo

and I was filed with cold binding fright

And as I sat there in amazement

silent thoughts begin to creep in

and suddenly as I watched her I knew it

this angel had been sent here by Him

She told me that my life was troubled

and down the wrong road I had trod

far from the righteous and the holy

far from the sheltering arms of my God

She told me that I was a sinner

and this thing I knew oh so well

she told to change my way of living

for I was headed straigh toward hell

She said I did not love my neighbor

I cheated, I had lied and I stole

no church door had I ever entered

and my life was dreadful and cold

And alone, alone in the night time

sitting there on my own wrinklled bed

my eyes filled up with wet teardrops

as I listened to the things that she said

And now on my knees I did stumble

head bowed low to my chest

and with an aching heart I cried for pity

and promised that I'd do my best

I'd be a better friend and a neighbor

and I'd help the poor orphaned child

I'd go to church each sabbath day

and try to keep my temper meek and mild

I'd help the old, weak and the feeble

I'd help the widow down the street

I'd help the hungry and the homeless

and the man with those bad crippled feet

And suddenly the night scenes were changing

and the sound of swift wings I heard

and then strange things were happening

for I was flying just like a bird

And up to paradise we flew in an instant

where peace, love and hope all abound

and  oh the beauty I saw there this night

no place on earth could be found

the streets there were all golden

and temples of white marble did glow

a choir of angels were singing sweet songs

in a soft and melodious flow

and then the strangest thing happened

for over me bright angel wings spread

and then too soon it all happened

I was back in my own rumpled bed

Now I thought 'bout this miracle that had happened

this most pleasant and enlightening of dreams

but just then I saw it, sparkling there in the darkness

angel dust on my bed spread, white and clean
