Across the road and down the lane
and unerneath the hill
is a fifty acre piece of land
Daddy's watermelon field
and in those days of summer
when the sun was burning hot
you'd find us running down the rows
getting to our favorite spot
The days were long and lazy
and the sand was white and hot
and to us bare foot back woods youngin's
I guess was quite a sight
We'd be skipping oer the sandspurs
now don't get stung by those red ants
and be careful when you jump
that barbed wire fence
and don't let it rip your pants
Now don't let Momma catch you
running with that big old butcher knife
cause you know what's going to happen
you'll be running for your life
There's nothing I find better on a sunny summer day
that to run down to the melon patch
and reach the pond and play
and settle on a grassy knoll
underneath the trees
and listen to the mocking bird
and feel the gentle breeze
Then grab a melon from the patch
it don't matter if it's hot
as long as it is ripe and red
the finest in the crop
Now hold that melon way up high
now drop it on the round
and watch those jagged edges
as they spin round and round
Now grab a big old jucy piece
cause there ain't no pain or strife
just use your fingers and your mouth
you don't need no spoon or knife
Oh it is so sweet and sticky
and the juice just flows and flows
dripping off your elbows
and landing 'tween your toes
And when youve eaten all you can
when your full as full can be
just lean back and take a little nap
underneath that big oak tree
I'd give most anything, I think
to relive those days once more
back in Daddy's melon patch
just like it was before
