An old farmer sat one day
out on his old porch swing
and saw his friend of many years
come riding up the lane
Come and set with me a little while
and we'll talk of old time things
while the sun is high up in the sky
and in the trees, the cardinal sings
We can talk about the weather
wonsder when the rain will stop
it's rained nigh on for three weeks now
hope it don't drown the crops
The wheat is doing pretty good
out in the back yard field
with golden tassels waving to and fro
hope we'll have a bumper yield
I saw the racoons got your peanuts
but your pumpkin crop looks good
you'll fill your shelves with vegetables
and you have a bumper crop of fire wood
I got calves romping in the field
they're getting fatter every day
I'll take them to the auction soon
and try to get a little pay
Think I'll go hunting in the morn
and try to shoot a deer
I ain't seen too many of them
they must be a little scarce this year
Well, I got the old truck fixed last week
it sure is easier to steer
it's shore been a good one tho
I hope it last's another year
I hear the county fair is coming soon
and Ma will take in her apple pies
they'll judge them all for taste and texture
I hope she gets first prize
And I'll go look at all the sheep
the horses, pigs and cows
I hope hey got the goats penned far away
they stink more than the law allows
I got to dig another well
the old one's 'bout gone dry
it's been just one thing after another
the pumps the latest thing I'll have to buy
Well, I hear Ma calling me to supper
I'm hungry, so I go with great elation
come back again and set a spell
I've enjoyed our conversation
