THE SPINSTER

 She wasn't pretty any more

her hair was mousy grey

she'd wrap it round and round her head

for she loked it worn that way

for he'd said

he loved her long and golden hair

which shown so in the sun

and she never cut it from that day

for he was her precious one

She had at one time been so beautiful

with eyes so blue and clear

and she loved a handsome soldier boy

and would always hold him dear

She'd lived alone for many years

inside her little home

and lonely days seemed ever long

for she was so alone

For long ago, she'd loved this boy

who had set her heart aglow

but soon he went to fight in world war one

the only love she'd ever know

Love letters flew both back and forth

they talked of marriage and a small house of stone

but all to soon he lost his life

t'was called, 'The Battle Somme'

The telegram had come to her

one sad day long ago

her young heart broke, she died inside

for she had loved him so

Long lonely years passed slowly by

and she mourned deep in her soul

for love had simply passed her by

and left her sad and old

She stayed to herself, no friends at all

and her counternance grew stern

no one had ever seen her smile, and why

no one had cared to learn

The little ring he'd given her

she kept

inside it's velvet box, in her old cedar chest

and every day she'd take it out

and hold it to her breast

She thought of things that might have been

oh , if he had not died

as tears streamed down her wrinkled cheeks

for his love, she'd been denied

Some folks called her an old recluse

some just turned the other way

but they all thought her strange and different

for by herself

she talked to some one, who wasn't there

every live long day

And then one day she simply disappeared

just vanished in the night

then they wondered just where she had gone

and if she was alright

But she was fine and laughing now

some where beyond the son

for her soldier had not forgotten her

his love was true

and he came one night, one awesome night

and simply took her home

And later on they only found

a soldiers hat, lying on her faded chair

and a velvet ring box lying empty

but the ring just was not there

But far away in a garden bright

in God's heaven up above

where there was no hurt or pain

she clasp him to her gentle heart

for she'd found her love again
