THE OLD FRONT PORCH

When the day is almost over

and the twilight's settling in

and I think of all my blessings

and my family and my friends

and I'm sitting on the front porch

and relaxing in my chair

and my mind is eased of burdens

not one worry, not one care

And the good Lord up in heaven

is throwing blessings down to you

oh how wonderful the feeling

when your problems are so few

Now whose sitting here beside me

well it's my wife of many years

and she's been my trusting help mate

through the laughter and the tears

and the year's we've spent together

have been happy ones and glad

and we've always pulled together

through the good years and the bad

Now the harvest it is in now

and the crops have all been good

we won't have to worry 'bout tomorrow

that's even if we should

Now there's cattle grazing in the fields

and we got a big old fishing hole

and at daybreak in the morning

I'll be down there with my pole

and I'll bring home a mess of fish

and put them on to fry

and with a big old pot of yellow grits

and home made ice tea to try

Now the cat's are all purring

and rubbing 'gainst my legs

and twilight always brings them home

to love you and to beg

And Lassie's sitting over there

just a wagging his old tail

and it makes thumping noises

as  it hits that old milk pail

Now you see them flowers down the path

we put them out this spring

and we've watched them bloom and prosper

now ain't they pretty things

Our children all live round us

all have places of their own

and their happy as the days are long

our daughters and our sons

Now on Sunday, we'll all go down to church

and sing praises to the Lord

and listen to the preacher

as he talks the word of God

Now it's twilight on our old front porch

and frogs are hollering for the rain

and the stars up in the heaven

are all shining down again

and the katydids are all chirping

down by the old fence row

and the lightening bug's is flying

in the darkness soft and low

Now the coffee in my cup is gone

and it's time to go to sleep

and we'll say our prayers before we go

and ask the Lord to keep

to keep our family safe and sound

with all that's in his power

as we're sitting on our old front porch

in this silent evening hour
