He slipped it on her finger
on the day that they were wed
a tiny golden circle
t'was all he could afford, he said
I don't think it cost too much
and a five was all he had
but Mom was worth a million
and it made him feel so sad
Times were hard back there in '33'
but Momma understood
that my Daddy had no money
and had done the best he could
But Momma wasn't worried
'bout that little golden ring
just being with my Daddy was good eough
and happiness, it would bring
They loved each other very much
and they had waited four long years
so they decided then to marry
and to put away all fears
So one early August morning
out came the Model T
and Daddy drove to town to get her
and they were married there at three
And he arrived that day so happy
with the license in one hand
and a box was in the other one
which held that golden band
There was chicken frying in the pan
and wedding cake for them to bless
as my Momma stood beside my Dad
in her blue and pretty dress
Then when the parson came along
they stood there hand in hand
and when the vows had all been said
he slipped it on her finger
that little golden band
Now life was hard but it was good
Daddy farmed and he had his cows
and Momma kept the house and raised her chicks
they were happy as the law allows
And then us kids both came along
and made their life complete
life was sunny and very good
happy and complete
So they lived their lives together
and never were they sad
and the last thing said
was "I love you'
each night before they went to bed
and at the end of every day
Mom kissed her wedding ring
to her it held such peace and love
such very precious things
And later on, some sixty years
when Mom lay in her final sleep
the little band stayed on her hand
Daddy said, t'was her' to keep
It was there that it should be
as tears streamed down his face
and never would it be removed
t'was in it's rightful place
For she had worn it all thoe years
and now it was so thin
that you couldn't see the orange blossoms
or even know where they had been
Now Mom and Dad lie together
up where the angels sing
and I believe that with her snow white robe
she wears her golden ring
