Now old Sam was an ornery old rascal
and he shore was a hit with the gals
he lived in a shanty on the out skirts of town
and the panthers and pole cat's was his pals
Now he had a bony old hound, named Dog
he ws yeller and skinny and mean
his ears were flappy and his eyes were dim
but his sense's of danger was keen
And Dog, he would always go with old Sam
to the saloon down in the middle of town
and while Sam would drink and dance with the gal's
old Dog, he'd just hassle around
Old Sam, he got real drunk one Saturday night
and he didn't remember what he'd done
but when he woke up with a hang over next morn
there lay his bride that he'd won
For he'd won old snaggle tooth Lizzie in a card game
won her on a ten dollar bet
Oh Loed he thought, as he looked at this hag
this is one card game I'll never ferget
Now Lizzie, she weren't no spring chicken
and her hair was stringy and grey
and she was so cross eyed, that she couldn't tell
if it was coming on night or was day
Now old Sam was in a state of depression
he just couldn't believe what he'd donre
and when he mentioned it down at the saloon the next day
all the blokes about died laughing from the fun
so old red faced Sam just got upand mosied on home
and old Dog just tagged along at his feet
but the closer he got to his old shanty home
he thought, something shore did smell sweet
he crossed o'er the threshold in wonder
for the room was a sight to behold
for it was clean, swept and neat
and the curtains were washed
and old Lizzie stood there by the stove
and there was fried chicken there on the table
and a big bowl of buttered creamed corn
and all of the fixin's that went along with it
the best Sam had eat in so long
Well Dog, he got all them old chicken bones
and he licked his lips and thought, hay
I hope he don't get rid of Lizzy to soon
for I shore want her to stay
Old Sam, he leaned back from the table
full as a tick, and he said
Lizzie, that was shore some fine vittles
and I think I'll just go off to bed
Now alt this went on for some days then
and old Sam wasn't sure how he felt
for his house was so clean, and he ate like a pig
and he had to let out a notch on his belt
but he decided it just wasn't to his liking
and he sent Lizzie packing to town
but along about supper time that evening
Old Dog showed his teeth with a frown
Now old Sam, hed got used to good cookin'
and when he looked all around
his house was a mess and so he guessed
he'd have to make that trip back to town
So he and old Dog, they trudged back to the saloon
that's right in the middle of town
and all the old cowboys stood there lookin' and
laughin' so hard, they'ed fall down
well he took old Lizzie back to the cabin
and as he sat on the porch half asleep
he decided he didn't care what any one thought
for the smells from the kitchen shore was sweet
Now let this be a lesson, young fellers
it ain't allers good looks you go by
for sometimes it worth it, to be well fed
and contented
and I'll tell you, it's shore worth a try
