At Numbers 22:21-34, An Allegory

Sometimes an incident may come to pass

so that God can direct us to a change;

like Balaam, that time, rebuked by an ass---

but which, on balance, does not seem too strange.

Then rainbows follow after fiercest storms;

and hailballs that have tumbled down in swarms

melt to release their water into earth

to give some new seeds a later summer birth.

Weather disturbances blew much astray

and thunderclaps loudly assailed the ear.

But sunlight drives dismality away;

as air becomes translucent, calm and clear;

and soft, doubly woven, opacity

reveals a sonnet's surge to poetry.
