...And They Changed

In faces so beautifully carved                     And in eyes so dark and deep

What terrible secrets do they keep?

Their hearts so profound                      And souls such chaste

Can they really afford them to waste?

Yet not so very long ago they cried along with us,

Wishing for death instead of pain:

"If only we all could smile for the rest of our lives

I guess we'd never be broke again!"

In a flesh so rotten                           In blood flowing free

What heaven of ecstasy do they see?

From the mountain tops              Or the eyes of a bird

Haven't they ever experienced the world?

Yet not too long ago they moved amongst us,
Praying to the Lord amidst chiming bells:
"In a world where the grass is greener and the sky is clear
I guess we all could forever be angels!"
