My Accompaniment

I am from music,
from crescendos and syncopation.
I am from the singer in the back
(shy at first, growing, moving up front)
I am from the choir teachers
the tough auditions
whose torturous stress I remember
as if it still haunts me today.

I'm from grades and goals.
from A's and acceptances.
I'm from the misinterpreted choir nerds
and too-cool make-up obsessed.
From Be positive! and Even more positive!
I'm from that reviving song
with a smiling face
and ten minutes we sing together.

I'm from the over sung
cough drops and hot tea.
From the cut we didn't make
thanks to stressing our voices.
the time we lost, now finally understanding our competitiveness.

In my room is a binder of songs
telling different stories,
a group of sad and happy
to dance in my sleep.
I am from the music--
playing for a smile--
ready for the music of life.

Author's Notes/Comments:

In my English class, we read a poem (Where I'm From by George Ella Lyon) and had to emulate it into our own.
