innocence

Childhood's quality is an instinct

that fades away with touch

through it, I saw you

and you, I could not clutch

We adventured through the trees

climbing each one carefully

falling, only to have

a useful ferocity

Of course, we did not know

that life would be harder when we were older

We had blankets; now

to hold on to if we got colder

I remember, watching all the grown men

who fought wars and shed tears amidst the rovers

I remember, wanting to be like them

You'd think we would have striven to be more sober

But as children we made mistakes

Mistakes that made us grow

Wrongs that became rights

and so we wanted to know

Sometimes I laugh

when I look out towards the sea

sometimes I cry

when I wonder how we used to be
