A Young Girl's Disguise

Folder:
Dawn

A young girl,

Carefully masked her face with makeup

To conceal her blemishes,

And to magnify her best qualities,

Then wore the most the most form-fitting tops and hip-hugging jeans

To convince him of her perfection.

She wore sunglasses so he could not see her insecurities

And the adoring way she gazed at him.

The young girl strained her tongue to say the right things,

Then curved her cherry lips to a charming smile

To lure him in.

Her vocal chords omitted much information

To evade his harsh reprimand and criticism,

But when she could not,

The young girl put her fingers in her ears and hummed,

So she would not be convinced of his cruelty and contempt for her.

She would show off cropped tank tops and petite shorts,

Expecting summer warmth,

But the young girl was forced to layer on clothing and a raincoat,

To shelter her from the violent downpours during the rainstorms.

The young girl complied with all requests,

As if obeying orders,

So she could please him with her acquiescence.

She passed her time by the telephone,

Anticipating for months it ringing with the chance it would be him

To wish her sweet dreams and a goodnight,

But always with no avail.

The young girl learned to convince herself and others

That she could live without him

By lying about the scars traced on her heart.

She learned to capture other guys,

But she could not convince herself of her feelings for them,

So she learned to let go and move on

Over and over,

Until the young girl reencountered a guy of whom she had taught herself to hide her feelings of adoration

By wearing a sweater over her heart,

Again altering her identity,

And avoiding her eyes meeting his,

So that he could not comprehend her emotion for him.

But slowly,

The young girl’s makeup began to fade in his presence,

Her clothes that masked her and her love wounds,

Pulled off one by one,

Revealing her true nature to him,

And he learned to cherish the young girl’s beauty that had been hidden

Behind her disguise.
