Charles Dickens

I have seen the rise and fall

of my great expectations

planted as seeds before the deepest frost,

and sleeping like animals awaiting safer days.

I have seen my great expectations

push through layers of dust and earth

to breathe the air, and fragrance the sunlight.

I nursed my great expectations

with water and songs,

and they grew tall and graceful

just like I've always wanted to be.

then the summer came

and the sun and humidity burned

and wilted my great expectations

leaving nothing but holes in the ground

for me to plant more in the fall.
