A small crowd gathered at the reflecting pond, but unlike most groups who gathered to visit or watch over their loved ones this group was ragtag. None were sick or injured, but any scars they had in life were still there and the old were still old. The Little One watched for a bit then went to find Pooky.
“Who are these? Why are they not restored to their prime? Why are they here?”, the questions tumbling out too fast to be answered. The Little One knew when a much loved companion passed and came here to Rainbow Bridge they were instantly restored. Some were rescued but never found a forever home, and some could not be saved but were rescued to be set free from pain. The rescued ones were not restored, but they wore the soft glow of the tears of the rescuer. These in this group were healed, but none were restored, and many did not wear the tears of a rescuer.
Pooky looked sadly at the gathered crowd. “These are guardians . . . . ,” he said slowly. “Most never knew love from any human, and some may never have even seen a human – but they have so much love in their hearts that they choose to watch over the Watchers and the Rescuers.” Pooky looked toward the group at the Reflecting Pond, “They gather when a rescuer or watcher is in pain from loss or begins to doubt themselves. They gather to send love and healing and to ease the pain. Shall we go see? We can send some healing also, if you wish.” The Little One nodded. She knew that rescuers and watchers were special and sometimes needed to be helped, but she had never heard of the Guardians before.
As they approached the group she heard sobbing, and when she looked into the waters of the Reflecting Pond she saw a human, crumpled down and crying. He was holding a small one who was in pain and very sick. While she watched another human quietly joined the first one. One of the gathered crowd turned to the Little One, as if they had heard her unspoken question. “The one crying is a rescuer, but he only just found the small one and she will soon begin her journey here. He does not know how much his gentle touch and his tears have already calmed her and eased her pain, he only sees that he cannot save her. The one with a kind face speaking to him is a healer he had hoped could help the small one. He does not see that he already has, he has spoken a name for her, a name she will keep in her heart. And he has brought her to a healer whose kind hands will ease her journey to Rainbow Bridge. We are here to meet Starlight when and to try to comfort the rescuer’s and healer’s hearts.” The guardian turned back to the Reflecting Pond and watched silently. An angel joined the rescuer and healer, seen only by Starlight. As the healer eased Starlight’s pain the angel picked her up and filled her with love and peace. Then the Little One saw the rescuer’s tears on Starlight’s soft fur begin to glow.
The Guardian turned back to the Little One, “Now our work begins. Part of us will greet Starlight, to help her understand. Most of us will stay here with the rescuer, to ease his doubts. Right now he feels he has failed and if playing all the ‘ifs’ – ‘if only he had found her sooner’, ‘if only he had known she needed help’, ‘what is he had tried to save her, could he have?’, and all of the other pains that grief creates. We will try to help him see that our stories are fore written, and he did exactly as was written as his part. He will need time to heal, and for now he will cry. But we will see that he is never really alone.”
As the guardian finished the angel appeared with Starlight and laid her small sleeping form near the gathered guardians. “She is here, now I need to tend to him,” the angel said quietly as he turned to go.
In the distance the Little One heard Starlight wake. “Can I tell him Thank You? Can I tell him I heard him say he loved me and that I love him?”
