The year 2020, was very challenging for us due to pandemic lockdown and taking classes online. I had to adopt new challenges while taking online classes in the context of differentiating learner’s ability to adapt and identifying their intelligence categories. As a mentor, I do always try to find out my learner’s way of learning techniques. Online classes are difficult in this regard. Without eye contact with the students and observing their physical gestures it is critical to identify their ability properly. According to my philosophy, I have to be in contact with the learners and treat them individually according to their needs.
I always believe that University teaching is not something which is absolutely confined with some printed-syllabus things! I like to take my teaching in an open space and I give my learners enough freedom to ponder on every topic in detail so that they can develop their own philosophy. I never allow any of my students to memorize any topic blindly without understanding every bit of it to the best. First of all, I invite ideas from the learners, what they think on the topic we discuss. I listen to them carefully and note the strengths and limitations of their discussions about the topic keywords. Then I highlight their missing keywords in such a way so that they can get the compact idea by themselves and they do not need to write or read anything blindly.
Learners joined online classes out of different circumstances. First of all, I have to know their situation, what they are going through and try to make them relax regarding the course. I strongly believe that in a particular course, the learners will enjoy if they find the topics are closely related to their daily life affairs and if the topics are going to be a benefactor issue in their future career. I always try to make examples from our real life and link it with the topic so that they can grasp the whole idea by themselves clearly. Apart from my lecture time, I allot enough time for my learners to discuss with me frankly and also by their course mates. Through their discussions, I also gather new experiences and new links to explain. In this way, I try to be amicable with the learners and they feel much comfortable with me sharing their idea without hesitation. In this way, I always try to explore the idea by the learners themselves, and in this way they become independent.
Regarding the question-making policy, I always consult with my colleagues and co-faculties at each and every point. I do abide by the University policies strictly and reflect them. I share the whole scenario with the student and highlight the ultimate positive goals from the students. I always keep in mind, “Bloom’s Taxonomy” while making an assessment. Apart from finishing the academic course sometimes I encourage my learners to motivate themselves towards research works. I believe that through research work we can build knowledge and facilitate the whole nation.
New Plan:
In this year, I along with the co-faculty members are planning to motivate the students in such a way so that they participate in the life classes willingly and in the upcoming semesters if we have to continue online, we will provide them more thought-provoking quizzes and open book assignments, open book tests, so that they can involve themselves with the whole idea and find their course interesting having to feelings of getting extra burden.
