"Why can't we go to the beach?" the youngest asked
"Because it's winter!" his brother replied.
The youngest looked puzzled...
"But I want to swim and build a castle"
I looked out the kitchen window and frowned at the snow.
I too wished we could go to the beach...
bask in the warm sun
and splash in the waves
build sand castles with moats
that needed a continual refill of water
from a bucket half empty by the time
it reached the castle
eat bologna sandwiches with sandy hands
feed the seagulls crusts
who believe they're starving
and let you know by crying
and giving you the evil eye
in hopes of guilting you
into sharing...they always win.
"Why can't we go?" the youngest asked...
His question brings me back to the kitchen
The youngest still not quite understanding
How swimming and sand castle building
doesn't work well in the winter
I begin to explain that it's too cold to swim
that the sand is covered with snow
and besides probably frozen...
when I remember the wading pool
and the tarp used for camping
in the garage...
Tarp on the kitchen floor
wading pool on top
some water and dish soap
and my trusty mop
The boys squealed with laughter
splashed and belly swam
and when all was said and done
Both declared "That was fun!"
I emptied out the water
Mopped the floor smiling
Put the pool and tarp away
Summer fun on a Winter's day.
