Huffing and chuffing he slid into place
Hoping no one had noticed his arrival.
This was not the way to impress a boss
Nor was it the manner to win the toss.
As he really did not want to lose face,
Being on time was one route to survival.
Events had conspired against being on time-
Two sick children really made a diff'rence.
Who was to know he'd misplace his car keys-
Usually he left home with practised ease.
Corporation ladders he had to climb-
There was no place for thoughts of indiff'rence.
Straightening his tie and clearing his dry throat
He briskly told the shared secretary
To usher in at once his first client
(The time to show he was self-reliant.)
Yes, now he was composed, a man to note;
Time for all around him to be wary.
Oops- one black sock, one brown.
