As she limped toward the auto,
As she made her way in tears,
As she dragged her abused body ,
She felt old beyond her years.
Once again she'd promised herself
She'd never again be hit.
Once again she needed stitches
And hoped that her bones would knit.
He was snoring on the sofa
Where, at last, he'd fallen down.
He was sleeping off the effects
Of his night upon the town.
Sleep would not remove her danger.
Whatever was she to do?
Well... this was it! She would leave him -
An action long overdue.
As she limped toward the auto,
As she stilled her heavy tears,
As she dragged her abused body,
She felt buoyed, beyond her fears.
